Inner City I-49 Connector (ICIC)
District 2 has the unflattering reputation of being one of the poorest and under-reinvested districts in our state. Because we have learned to do more with less than any other district, perhaps that within itself tells the reason why we get less than any other district. There is a long-standing myth about the people of these struggling neighborhoods, which lie in the wake of the almighty North-South I-49 Corridor, being opposed to its journey through their front yards or backyards. I-49 will provide a clear and direct path for interstate travel from Canada via I-29, then I-49 to our southern most point in New Orleans.
Why has it been such a myth you might ask? Because citizens were making uneducated decisions concerning the negative effects of the Inner City I-49 Connector (ICIC) passing through their neighborhood. Once they realized special interested parties seeded their neighborhood resident with nonfactual and erroneous information for their own benefit, they were in full support of the ICIC. Ask yourself . . . why would any poor, jobless, hopeless, struggling, and starving community stop -- such an economically stimulating, sensational job producing, baffling businesses building, strong housing developing, and neighborhood renewing locomotive, like the ICIC section -- dead in it tracks at the corner of I-20 and I-49? The ICIC section, part of an engineering marvel, can carry a cargo of over 20,000 potential traveling customers daily within the transportation corridor, and carry a potential construction economic impact alone of nearly $400 million dollars.
Representative Burrell continues to be a champion for a traditionally voiceless and hopeless people in the inner city neighborhoods of House District 2 who are trying to save their historic neighborhood. He works tirelessly for the ICIC project, continuing to monitor the activities so that our existing central core investment and infrastructure are protected and not undermined or diminished. More information on ICIC can be found in the I-49 Report.
